Welcome to the Northern Society of Costume and Textiles!
About the Society
Founded in 1977, we are a friendly subject-specialist group interested in all aspects of dress and textiles, historical and modern.
Located in and around Yorkshire, we hold four meetings a year with expert speakers, including curators, researchers, artists and more. Click on Events for what’s coming up!

A welcoming home for enthusiasts, makers, subject specialists, researchers and students.
For students
If you are at university studying fashion, costume or textiles, the NSCT is an easy way to go beyond the studio: hear from curators, see real pieces, and meet people who love the same things you do. With contacts in the creative arts and heritage sectors, it’s a great place to network and connect.
Join the Committee!
Are you an NSCT member who enjoys our events? Would you like to help us run events and shape the future of the Society? You could join the committee. If you’re interested, please come talk to a member of the committee at our next event, or email us on nsct.committee@gmail.com or by using the contact form.
If you’d like to help out, but don’t have the time to join the committee, we always welcome help with refreshments, setting up rooms and spreading the news about events. Please get in touch and let us know what you’d like to help with.

Passion for historical and contemporary costume and textiles
01
Costume
Expect everything from in-depth historical knowledge from curators and historians to professional customers actively working in theatre and film. The mix of conservation insights and hands-on sessions, our programme is broad and varied. Our selection of talks and onsite visits rotate regularly, so there is always something new to discover.

02
From championing endangered heritage crafts to celebrating items crafted by human hands throughout the ages, we are continually inspired by textiles and how they shape us. Our sessions showcase skills and objects from embroidery to weaving, print and embellishment, and many things besides, presented by specialist speakers and experts in their fields.
" Since joining the society, I've learnt so much and had countless wonderful conversations about so many different subjects. I've visited places I wouldn't have know about before, and picked up skills to use in my own sewing and embroidery"
Faye, NSCT Secretary.
