Opus Anglicanum: My Work in Medieval Embroidery

© Tanya Bentham
Opus Anglicanum means “English work”, the name for English embroidery that was famous all over Europe in the Middle Ages. One of the best-known examples is the Bayeux Tapestry. Tanya is known for her gorgeous, intricate and fun reproductions of medieval designs, and has published several books on the subject. She works entirely with medieval images, materials and techniques, but adds a modern twist, often drawing on the humour and storytelling of medieval art, which she says has far more in common with modern cartoon strips than people realise.
Afternoon
Saima Kaur
Phulkaris: A Source for Contemporary Storytelling

This talk and workshop explores how traditional Phulkari embroideries from Punjab have been reimagined by Saima to create contemporary stitched artworks that surprise and delight. It includes traditional and contemporary Phulkaris and Saima’s own artworks, before sharing techniques for creating such embroideries. Saima is a hand embroidery artist who creates stitched artworks for interiors. She has been featured in Embroidery Magazine, has taught online workshops for Stitch Club, Making Zen and Selvedge magazine, and has sold her work through Glassette and The Shop Floor Project.
