NSCT ✶ Est. 1977
Our February meeting was held in Liverpool: at the Bluecoat Chambers in the city centre in the morning, and at the Conservation Centre in the afternoon.
The original shopaholic
Pauline Rushton, Curator of Costume and Textiles at the Walker Art Gallery, spoke about the Tinne family and their shopping habits. Mrs Tinne must have been the original shopaholic: many of the items donated to the museum since 1967 are unworn and still in their packaging, with price labels attached. Seeing family photographs, then the actual garments worn in them, was fascinating. The photographs were black and white or sepia, so the colours of the real clothes brought the years between the wars to life.
The Conservation Centre
After lunch, a fifteen-minute walk took us to the Conservation Centre to see textiles from the Ethnology Department: Tahitian bark cloth, New Zealand flax garments, African printed and embroidered textiles, and Canadian textiles made from red cedar. A curator introduced each group, and there were plenty of lively questions.
