NSCT ✶ Est. 1977

A special meeting in Leeds to mark our 25th year, looking at the effect technology has had, and is still having, on textile and dress design and performance. The technology was kept to a minimum; its effects were the focus. There were four speakers instead of the usual two, and the meeting was also open to members of The Costume Society and The Textile Society.

Dr Ian Holme: dyeing, printing and finishing

The Enhancement of Aesthetics and Performance by Novel Dyeing, Printing and Finishing covered developments from jet dyeing, transfer printing and digital ink-jet printing to wrinkle-free, flame-retardant, antimicrobial and sun-protection finishes, Superwash wool, and microencapsulated fragrances. Ian, a former Senior Lecturer at the School of Textile Industries, University of Leeds, is a textile chemist and colourist with over forty years’ experience. A Past-President of the Society of Dyers and Colourists and winner of the Textile Institute’s Warner Memorial Medal, he has published over 650 articles and edits the Journal of the Textile Institute.

Sarah Braddock: designers and new fabrics

International Fashion Designers and their use of new flexibles looked at avant-garde designers rather than the high street, illustrated with slides and original fabric samples. Sarah is a Lecturer in Textiles at Goldsmiths College, University of London, specialising in fibre and textile technologies in fashion and art. She is co-author of Techno Textiles: Revolutionary Fabrics for Fashion and Design, and co-curated the British Council touring exhibition Fabric of Fashion.

Philip Warren: fabrics in fashionable dress

At Just the Right Moment: New Possibilities in Fashionable Fabrics traced key developments in fabric use from the end of the 18th century to today, and their place in fashionable dress, marketing and culture. Philip is Keeper of Cultural Life for Leicestershire County Council Museums, responsible for the fashion collections including the Symington Collection of Corsetry and Swimwear. He last spoke to the Society in April 1995, on sportswear as leisurewear.

David Brook: performance clothing

Performance Clothing: Modern Developments and Testing Techniques covered comfort and protection, thermal balance and water vapour transmission, new fabrics and coatings, and how performance is measured. David has researched performance and comfort in clothing at the Department of Textile Industries, University of Leeds, since 1979, with a particular focus on mountaineering clothing and new materials from Gore-Tex to fleece and wicking base layers.
