On Saturday 19 September, a group of us gathered at New North Road Baptist Church in Huddersfield for two amazing presentations on Hollywood glamour.

Morning: The History Wardrobe

Lucy Adlington and Meridith Towne of The History Wardrobe gave a funny and fabulous presentation on the Hollywood glamour of the 1930s to the 1950s, with surprise appearances from Mae West, Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Lucy and Meridith showed how ordinary people styled and adapted their clothes to capture the look of the stars, using original pieces alongside recreations made from vintage patterns.

Afternoon: Kate Ireland

Kate Ireland took us through her process for making the bias-cut gowns worn by the stars of the silver screen. Using sample pieces, she explained her tried and tested methods for choosing fabric, cutting the pattern, stitching and finishing, so the final garment doesn’t turn into a horror movie.
